Justin's musical career began as a young child as he began to sing at school and became involved in a few choirs. At about the age of 11, he was given a 25 key electric keyboard from his grandfather and began to write small compositions with it. "The funny thing about it was that I had never taken piano lessons. I guess I was able to translate what I had already learned from singing into playing." Justin's parents soon gave in and purchased a piano and he soon took piano lessons. He wrote his first full length song with vocals at the age of 15.
At 17, Justin got a guitar and began teaching himself how to play. One year later he had his first promising guitar song written. Justin continued to write through high school which culminated with a performance at his High School Commencement. "I had written the song about how I felt about graduation, so I decided to play it for the school talent show. The next thing I knew, the entire student council is begging me to play it for graduation. That's when I first realized I might have a future in this line of work."
Although this had donned on him, Justin kept his major of Computer Science. Unfortunately, only a few weeks after going away to college, Justin's songwriting had hit a huge bump in the road. He was plagued with writers block for almost a year and a half. "There was about 8 or 9 months where I wrote a total of 2 songs. After that I had small, minimal success at writing, but it was awhile before I had a huge burst where I began to write a ton."
It was about this time that Justin joined the band Third Wheel, later known as Father Blue Eyes. "Being in the band was so important to my songwriting ability. It helped me become a better, more proficient songwriter, plus I learned about the entire business side of the profession, which I would never have been able to figure out on my own. I owe a lot to the band for helping me get started."
Justin's first real solo gig was in October of 2000. Since then he has been performing a lot solo and has written a ton of new music. One of his songs, "I've Got My Friends" even received an 'Honorable Mention' in the John Lennon Songwriting Contest. He has even played in a few states in the Midwest. Trying to establish a name for himself in the business, he now has moved to New York City. "I finally understand what it means when they say that 'You will know when you have found your calling in life'. I absolutely love doing this and I hope that I will be able to continue with it for quite some time."
While in New York he will be attending NYU for a masters degree in Music Technology, but the music performing comes first. Justin plans on really hitting the music scene hard. "This is a huge step. From here, I'll be able to get my career into motion. Hopefully I can play as many places as possible and make some sort of buzz in the city about my music. I feel like this is my shot, and I'm going to try to make the best of it. I guess we'll just have to see where it takes me from here."
